EDWARD LEAR'S BOOK OF NONSENSE FIFTH EDITION 1862

A Book of Nonsense. By Edward Lear. Fifth Edition. With many new pictures and verses.

London, Routledge, Warne and Routledge, [1862].
Oblong octavo, comprising title page, dedication leaf and 112 single leaf illustrations by Lear with verses underneath, bound in the original cloth backed pictorial boards which are rubbed soiled and worn at corners, spine recased with one joint repaired, one leaf torn and repaired without loss, a few other small tears or frays without loss, 1 illustration bound upside-down, light soiling or minor faults, a reasonable copy of this difficult title.

FIFTH EDITION. The famous Book of Nonsense is notoriously difficult to come by in early editions such as this. It was first published privately in 1846 in two volumes with 73 'limericks', and again in 1855; this Routledge 'trade' edition with 112 limericks first appeared the previous year with the third edition of 1861; at least 2 editions -the fourth and this fifth- followed in 1862, with countless further reprints in various formats down the years to the present day.

This is one of the earliest printings in its final form, however.
