A SCHOOLBOOK OF 1777 IN EXCELLENT CONDITION

NEWBERY, JOHN.: Arithmetic made Familiar and Easy to
Young Gentlemen and Ladies, being the second volume of the
circle of the sciences.
London, T
Carnan and F Newbery, 1777.
18mo, pp vi, 198, contemporary plain sheep, gilt ruled and
numbered '2' to the spine, joints cracked but holding
soundly, internally clean and tight throughout, a very good
copy, FOURTH EDITION; second in
the Circle of Sciences series issued originally, and
possible written, by John Newbery. They were an early
commercial success, this title first appearing in 1746 under
the title 'The Art of Arithmetic'. Seven volumes in all
would eventually be published, this a particularly well
preserved example in contemporary, perhaps original, plain
sheep. Maryanne Lewis owned the book in 1782, according to
an endpaper inscription and she evidently kept it well.
